Grabs

Grab is a mechanical tool employed to hold, carry, and transfer big and heavy objects. This machine may commonly include the deployment of jaws or claws to grab hold of the material securely. They are applied widely in construction industry, manufacturing industries, waste disposal industries, docks and harbours, and mining industries where there is a need for handling and moving large piles of materials such as sand, gravels, coal and scrap metals. These grabs are fixed on top of the hoisting mechanism of the crane. They are also used by the crane operator to achieve a safe handling of the materials since they carry considerable risk in case of breakdown or any kind of failure.

Crane manufacturers use several types of grabs, including clamshell grabs, orange peel grabs, timber grabs, etc. Clamshell grabs are two hinged shells that close like a clam to give a basket-like shape that can be used to handle sand, gravel or coal among others.

Orange peel grasps have more than one claw that shuts in a rotary motion, and such grippers are ideal for interacting with those objects whose shapes are unduly shaped such as metallic scraps or waste products. Depending on the nature of the application, these grabs can be constructed to hold a variety of sizes of material.

With help of grabs, cranes can easily and efficiently pick up and move around several items, thus reducing on downtime and ramping up productivity. Furthermore, grabs may also contribute to avoiding accidental occurrences and incidents because of proper holding of materials in lifts and lower activities.
